State inspectors checked 68 Pompano Beach food businesses in October. 49 ended in the clear, none had an emergency order and 15 had a complaint recommended.

State inspectors visited 68 restaurants, cafes, bars and other food businesses with a Pompano Beach address between Oct. 1 and Oct. 30. At 49 of them, the latest visit ended in the clear.

No Pompano Beach business had an emergency order in October. At 15, the latest visit ended with the inspector recommending an administrative complaint. Four more had a warning with no follow-up visit recorded yet.

The figures come from the food service inspection file for District 2, which covers Broward County. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s Division of Hotels and Restaurants publishes it. We downloaded it Oct. 31, and it lists inspections through Oct. 30. Florida does not score or grade restaurants. Each visit records a count of violations and an outcome.

October in numbers

The file holds 75 inspections at 68 establishments in October:

  • 62 were first visits: 54 routine inspections, four licensing inspections of new or changed businesses and four prompted by a complaint.
  • 13 were callbacks, return visits to check that problems had been fixed. Some followed up visits from September.

On first visits, the inspector recorded no high-priority violation at 17 of 62. First visits recorded a median of 4.5 violations of any kind.

The state file lists the city as Pompano Beach for all 68. A Pompano Beach mailing address does not always mean the business is inside the city limits. One, Rootzbarncafe, has a 33321 ZIP code on North University Drive, well west of the city. Two others are at the Florida’s Turnpike service plaza at mile marker 65.

Callbacks also cleared problems at several places. Quintal Brazil, 1905-1915 E. Atlantic Blvd., had a warning Oct. 6 with five high-priority violations; the inspector found none the next day. Two of the callbacks followed warnings earlier in the month. Grub Finer Diner had a warning Oct. 27, with 12 violations, seven of them high priority. Lester’s Diner had one Oct. 19, with eight violations, two of them high priority.

A warning means the inspector set a deadline to fix the violations and will return. “Recommended” means the inspector recommended a complaint. Any penalty comes later through the division’s own process, and the business can contest it.

Every business named here can give its side. If one does, we will add its response.

What it means for you

An inspection is a snapshot of conditions on the day of one visit. It is not a rating of the food, and a later visit can find something different.
