Safety tips
From the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Halloween safety tips:
- Be seen. Choose bright costumes and add reflective tape or glow-in-the-dark touches to costumes and treat bags. Carry a flashlight after dark.
- Fit matters. Costumes and shoes should fit well and be short enough not to trip on. Look for “flame resistant” on costume, wig and accessory labels.
- Walk smart. Go with young children. Older children should go in a group with a planned route and a set time to be home. Use sidewalks and crosswalks, avoid mid-block crossings, and do not assume drivers will stop.
- Porch lights. Only go to homes with a porch light on.
- Check treats at home before eating, and throw away anything unwrapped or suspicious. Children with food allergies should carry their prescribed emergency medicine.
- At home: clear tripping hazards from the porch and walk, check outdoor lights, and use a flameless candle in jack-o’-lanterns.
Drivers: the AAP notes that motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters, so slow down in neighborhoods on Halloween night.
