Downed lines and trees
Broward County’s hurricane guide says:
- Treat every downed power line as live. If a line is sparking or arcing, call 911.
- Avoid standing water, which can hide downed lines, and do not go out in the dark after a storm.
- Do not trim trees on or near power lines yourself. Only trained professionals should work near lines; FPL’s Right Tree, Right Place guidelines are at FPL.com/Reliability.
- When traffic signals are out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
Generators
Florida exempts portable generators of 10,000 running watts or less from sales tax all year; see our hurricane prep guide. The county’s generator safety tips:
- Run a portable generator outside in a well-ventilated area, never indoors, including a garage or crawl space.
- Never connect it directly to your house wiring; power can flow back into the lines.
- Install battery-operated or plug-in carbon monoxide alarms with battery backup. You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide; if you feel sick, dizzy or weak while a generator runs, get to fresh air at once.
- Do not refuel a generator while it is running, and do not store fuel indoors.
- Have a licensed electrician install a permanent generator, with the needed permits; see our permits guide.
If you depend on electricity for medical equipment
Sign up for Broward County’s Vulnerable Population Registry before a storm. The county’s special needs shelter registry is 954-831-3902.
Starting or moving FPL service
New residents set up electric service with FPL; the company’s Start, Stop, Move page and customer service line, 1-888-988-8249, handle it. See our moving to Pompano Beach guide for water, trash and other services.
Water and sewer are city services
If the power is out and you have no water, or you see a water main break or sewer overflow, call the city’s utilities line: 954-786-4637 during business hours (Monday to Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.), 954-540-5769 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and 954-942-2202 after 7:30 p.m. and for emergencies, according to the Utilities Department.
